Anxiety Attacks - Alcohol - The Secret Perpetrator

!: Anxiety Attacks - Alcohol - The Secret Perpetrator

Many people tend to turn to alcohol to help them cope with life's stressors and anxiety. Unknown to many, is the fact that alcohol merely provides temporary relief and may actually exacerbate anxiety attacks. This exacerbation does not occur immediately while drinking but occurs later. As alcohol provides some people with temporary relief, a sense of well being and lowered inhibition with increased confidence, most people will find it difficult to understand how alcohol actually exacerbates anxiety.

Alcohol is metabolized by the liver and exerts its actions primarily on the brain. Alcohol in excess amounts will eventually damage these two vital organs. It is these two organs that play an important role in controlling our mood and anxiety levels.

Our moods are controlled by various neurotransmitters found within the brain. The delicate balance between the various neurotransmitters must be maintained in order to preserve our mood and regulate our responses towards anxiety. Alcohol disrupts this delicate balance by destroying the chemical structures.

Secondly, a damaged liver will be unable to produce neurotransmitters in the required amounts and neither will it be able to metabolize these neurotransmitters appropriately.

People with excessive alcohol consumption also tend to be undernourished due to an imbalanced diet and also because alcohol tends to flush out certain essential nutrients from the body. The nutrients, mainly vitamins and minerals, are important as they act as co-factors in the production of neurotransmitters.

All of the above factors act in tandem in disrupting ones moods resulting in an individual being prone to anxiety and anxiety attacks. In addition, the effects of alcohol withdrawal may also mimic anxiety attacks.

So what can you do if you are suffering from anxiety? The most logical thing would be to avoid or reduce alcohol consumption. An individual must exert sufficient self control in order to control his/her drinking habits. It is also important to ensure that one is obtaining adequate nutrition as this will help avoid deficiencies of vitamins and minerals. A well balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables will help to address this issue. Supplemental vitamins C and B complex and magnesium should be consumed if one insists on continuing to drink. Exercise is also an important component as the secretion of endorphins that accompany exercise helps to maintain and regulate ones mood. A moderate exercise program will protect your brain and your liver from the ill effects of alcohol.

Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

!: Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

Outpatient alcohol treatment programs are used to help alcoholics find ways to take control of their lives. The programs are designed to help those who have hit rock bottom, but still has some control to seek help. Inpatient services are more designed for those with serious alcohol problems.

At the outpatient centers, qualifying counselors are on staff to help you discover why you feel that you need alcohol to survive. They will often let you talk about your problems and assist you with finding new ways to solve those problems without the use of alcohol.

Counselors at the outpatient alcohol treatment centers will often recommend the twelve-step programs, which is the AA Meetings or Alcohol Anonymous programs. These programs are group meetings where men and women join three times each week to discuss their problem. In the programs they often lean on each other for support, and will often learn how to take control of their life by following the twelve steps in sobriety.

AA Meetings can be a lot of fun. If you enjoy being around people and enjoy hearing others story, you will enjoy spending times at the meetings. Do not be ashamed of attending these meetings, as these people are struggling for their sobriety and are proud to be a part of one of the largest groups of individuals who are proudly taking control of their life.

The outpatient alcohol treatment programs on the other hand, you will be assigned to a counselor. Each week you will have a one-on-one meeting. These meetings can help you achieve a balance, especially if you intend to join the AA services.

Keep in mind that no program or outpatient service will work unless you have a desire to clean up your life. If you have this desire, hope is there. On the other hand, if you are not ready to give up alcohol, then it will be an up and downhill slide all the way. You can expect from continuing using alcohol this-

Jail time

o Fines and court fees

o Strikes against your driving record

o Increase payments in insurance

o Loss of driver license

There is a lot more at stake than what is mentioned in this article. This is not a scare tactic, but a reality check to help you see that alcoholism is not the answer to solving problems. If you feel that you have an alcohol problem and that problem is more than you can take, get the help you need with the outpatient alcohol treatment programs.

You can find AA meetings anywhere in any state. Just check your local listings.
